Quick Interview:

Q: Where are you from?
A: I’m from Wisconsin, USA.

Q: Favorite genre to write?
A: It’s a tie between young adult paranormal/supernatural and adult thrillers/mysteries.

Q: What inspired you to write the Darkhaven Saga?
A: Reading inspired me to become a writer. In late-2008, I went on a reading binge and read as much YA paranormal fiction I could get my hands on. A year later, I decided to attempt writing my first novel. That book became Dark Secret, book one of the Darkhaven Saga. Granted, the version published today is drastically different from my original idea, but some basics remained the same.

Q: Do you plan on writing more than 5 books for the Darkhaven Saga?
A: I would love to continue writing books in this world. Ava and her friends are a lot of fun to write, and they keep getting themselves in to a mess of trouble, which makes for good storytelling. But continuing the series isn’t up to me—it’s up to the readers. My publisher makes series continuation decisions based on reader response, so the best way to carve a path toward more books is to support the series. Buy the books or borrow them from your local library. Review the books on sales platforms or Goodreads. Post about them on social media. Share the series with your friends. The more people who read the series, the more likely my publisher will contract more books.

Q: Which book, if you could pick one, did you enjoy the most to write?
A: It’s really hard for me to choose my favorite. Every time I write a new book in the series, I think that’s my best work. But then I write the next one, and it becomes my favorite. It’s a vicious cycle. What I love about this series is that it’s full of twists, and it drops readers directly into the action. By no means is it a slow read, and that makes it really enjoyable to write.

Q: Any new projects you working on?
A: Yes! I am working on a book right now, but I can’t share any details yet. Hopefully soon!

Q: When did you write your first book?
A: This is such a hard question to answer, because writing has always been part of my life. I used to write stories as a child. In high school, I was the Teacher’s Assistant for the English department, and in college, I served on the editorial board for the university’s literary magazine. I then went on to graduate school and received an MFA in creative writing. During these years, I was reading and writing, but I didn’t start publishing until 2015.

Q: What do you think makes a great story?
A: I think it’s most important to write characters your readers can connect with on some level, regardless of genre. For example, when I write about vampires and witches and a war between mortals and immortals, I’m writing about things we cannot experience ourselves, yet I try to make it as believable and relatable as possible, because readers must be able to connect with my heroine and sympathize with her situation, even if they have never experienced her blunders themselves. That connection forms a bond between the reader and the words written, and that bond is what invokes emotion. The best stories have characters we connect with on a deeper level than merely ink on a page.

Q: Any new upcoming releases?
A: Yes! Dark Spell, the fourth installment in my young adult paranormal series, Darkhaven Saga, releases on Tuesday, August 4th! The fifth installment, Dark Curse, releases on Tuesday, October 27th.

Danielle also wrote a Contemporary Romance Duet: Pieces of Me
